about FoCUS

The mission of FoCUS and the First Pres Undergrad Ministry is simple:
“To persuade students that Jesus Christ is Lord and that no one else is.”

We do this by
offering the welcome of Christ,
teaching the word of Christ and
equipping them to see Christ at work in the World

We persuade students by:

  • Teaching the Word of Christ: A convincing, thoughtful and engagement presentation of the gospel through the words of Scripture, in preaching, small groups and discipleship training.
  • Offering the Welcome of Christ: We extend an invitation to all manner of students, working hard to make sure that everyone feels welcomed into our community. And once students are welcomed, we follow up, making sure they know they are cared for. We acknowledge that belonging often precedes believing.
  • Equipping them to see Christ as work in the World: We believe that Christ is Lord of the marketplace, and seek to show students how they can serve God in the world. We send students into the world, equipped to follow Christ in every walk of life.

We think that Jesus and His Word is worthy of our sustained attention and pursuit.

  • We take seriously the commitment to study and know his word
  • We think that the Christian faith is as intellectually and imaginatively engaging as any studies

That Jesus is already at work in the world and in students lives

  • The role of the staff is called to equip students and not to do ministry for them.
  • We bathe our work in prayer
  • The final trajectory is not within our community – we are sending students out into the world.

We think that the welcome of Christ into a new community is definitive

  • We actively call people into our community throughout the whole year.
  • All people are welcomed, no matter their past, present, or seeming potential. We go out of our way to make the stranger feel welcome.
